September Flyway Brief
Mid-September is a narrow window. Most North American duck seasons do not open until October. Three bird seasons are open on those exact three days.
This brief covers what is legal that weekend, which lodges clean and pack the birds for you, and what each trip costs. It ranks three options and lists the traps. Prices are per hunter in USD unless marked.

Texas changed its rules for 2026–27. The state removed the special white-winged dove weekends and moved the South Zone opener to 1 September. That change turned your weekend from a two-day white-wing window into a full three-day regular season.

First choice

Prairie Canada: Saskatchewan or Alberta waterfowl
The season opens 1 September. Mid-September is the peak of the early season. You hunt dry grain fields over big decoy spreads. This is the best version of the trip you described.
Birds
Canada geese, snow geese, specklebelly geese, mallards, pintails, wigeon, sandhill crane. All are excellent food. Hunters call the crane the "ribeye of the sky".
Cleaning
Included. The standard package covers bird cleaning. Some lodges also pack the meat for the flight home.
Included
Guides, scouted fields, blinds, decoys, lodging, meals, ammunition, licence. Several lodges also lend or rent shotguns.
Extras
Two hunts per day. Add a dedicated crane hunt. Ask each lodge about clays; these lodges focus on hunting more than on side activities.
Widgeon Waterfowl Saskatoon, SK
$3,600 for 3 days and 5 hunts. Licence, 10 boxes of shells, meals, lodging, bird cleaning and travel prep. Benelli rental guns, so you do not need to fly with a shotgun.
Prairies Edge Outfitting Saskatchewan
$2,800 basic or $3,800 all-inclusive, 3 days and 5 hunts. Shotguns and unlimited 12 gauge shells included. Sandhill crane is added free when cranes are in the area. Note the schedule: they run Monday–Wednesday or Thursday–Saturday, so ask for 10–12 September.
Ranchland Outfit · Ameri-Cana Battle River Lodge Alberta
$3,750 and $3,500 for 3 days. Both include bird processing, lodging, meals and licensing. Alberta has no outfitter requirement for birds, so the paperwork is simpler than Saskatchewan.
Check first
Saskatchewan changed non-resident game bird licences in March 2026. Non-residents now get two five-day licences in the fall instead of a season-long licence. Ask the outfitter to confirm your licence in writing before you pay a deposit. You also need a passport, and a firearm declaration (CAD 25) if you bring your own gun.

South and Central Texas: dove
The dates fit exactly, with no zone problems. Dove hunting is social, warm and forgiving. It suits a birthday group with mixed experience, because everybody shoots a lot and nobody sits in cold water at 05:00.
Birds
Mourning dove and white-winged dove. 15 birds per day, 45 in possession. Small birds, but the breast meat is very good.
Cleaning
Available. Confirm per ranch. Some ranches run a full bird-cleaning and meat-care facility.
Season
South Zone 1 September – 25 October 2026. North Zone 1 September – 8 November 2026. Shooting hours are now 30 minutes before sunrise to sunset on all days.
Extras
This is the strongest option for lessons, clays and gun safety. Afternoon hunts leave the mornings free.
Joshua Creek Ranch Boerne, TX · 45 min from San Antonio
Orvis Endorsed Wingshooting Lodge of the Year for 2026. Full-time shooting instructors for beginners, a sporting clays course and a wobble trap for gun mount and lead practice. All-inclusive dove packages run in September only. Bird cleaning is not stated on the site, so call and confirm: 830-537-5090.
Four Seasons Ranch South Texas
$1,100 for 2 days, 2 nights and 4 hunts, with lodging, meals and lodge activities. It has a bird-cleaning and meat-care facility, a trap machine at the lodge and a large lodge with a cantina. 713-252-0061.
Check first
September in South Texas is hot. Get the birds on ice immediately. Book the ranch and the guns early, because the September dove opener is the busiest wingshooting weekend in Texas.
Simplest logistics
$3,000+3 days, all inclusive
The Dakotas: early Canada goose
No passport, no border, and over-the-counter licences. Non-residents cannot draw a regular waterfowl licence easily in South Dakota, but the early goose licence is sold over the counter. That makes a late booking possible.
Birds
Local Canada geese. Limits are high: 15 per day in North Dakota. Add an afternoon dove or pigeon hunt at some lodges.
Cleaning
Varies, and this is the weak point. Confirm it before you book.
Season
South Dakota 1–30 September 2026. North Dakota eastern zone to 22 September, western zone to 15 September. The Missouri River zone closes 7 September, so avoid it.
Licence
North Dakota charges $50 for the non-resident early Canada goose licence, plus a habitat stamp.
High Prairie Lodge and Outfitters Central South Dakota
Early goose hunts from late August through September. 3-day all-inclusive from $3,000, with the best rate for groups of 7 or more. The site lists bird cleaning for upland options, so confirm that geese are included. Dave Ciani, 605-261-7793.
SkyView Outfitters South Dakota
Morning goose hunts with optional afternoon dove and pigeon hunts. Warning: clients clean their own birds. The lodge supplies a cleaning room and a freezer, not a service. That fails your requirement.
Named by local hunters on Reddit as the good guided operations in the Webster–Waubay lake country. Treat these as leads to call, not as verified packages.
Check first
Early-season geese are local birds, not migrators. Success depends on the lodge holding good fields. Ask how many hunts per day you get, because several lodges run mornings only in September.
Traps
What does not work that weekend
Texas teal. The 2026 season is 19–27 September. It misses your weekend by eight days. Many older guides still recommend "September teal in Texas", so ignore that advice this year.
Manitoba on your own. Foreign hunters need a seven-day migratory game bird licence through a licensed outfitter, or a draw licence. Draw applications close 15 July each year, and a draw licence does not permit outfitter services. The outfitter route still works if you want Manitoba.
Regular duck season anywhere in the United States. It starts in October or later. Only the early goose, teal and dove seasons run in September.
Lodges that give you a cleaning room. Ask the exact question: "Do your staff breast, pack and freeze the birds?" Several lodges supply a room and a freezer and call it bird cleaning.
Before you book
Logistics
Guns
The simplest option is to rent at the lodge. Widgeon rents Benelli shotguns, and Prairies Edge includes shotguns. If you take your own gun into Canada, complete form CAFC 909 before you arrive, and sign it in front of a border officer. The fee is CAD 25.
Meat home
Hunters report that you can bring the meat back from Canada if it is deboned, and if you keep the licence and tags with the meat. This is hunter practice, not a quoted regulation. Confirm the current rule with the outfitter and with US Customs before you fly.
Lessons and safety
Texas is the clear winner here. Joshua Creek Ranch employs full-time instructors and runs a sporting clays course and a wobble trap. Use Friday 11 September for instruction and clays, then hunt Saturday and Sunday.
Timing
Book now. Prairie lodges fill up during the previous winter, and September dove ranches fill early. Hunters on Reddit repeat the same advice: send the emails months ahead, and expect the good operations to be full by late summer.
